Private RV sites: Kankakee & Northwest Indiana

Working farms across the old Grand Kankakee Marsh — DeMotte, Wheatfield, and the farm roads south of Valparaiso and LaPorte. Draining the marsh left dead-flat fields, straight drainage ditches, and enormous skies; a site here is usually a gravel lane or a pad behind the barn, an easy hour from Chicago's south suburbs.

$40–65 / night · typical host rates Electric + water typical Fits rigs up to 40 ft

Typical hookups

Better than most rural regions: many farmsteads have 30- or 50-amp service and water at the barn, and some hosts closer to town offer full hookups. Ask anyway — older farms may only have a 20-amp outlet in the machine shed.

Rig size notes

The flat country is kind to big rigs — most lanes and pads handle 40 feet without drama. Spring is the exception: a high water table keeps low ground spongy after snowmelt.

Good to know

This is marsh country even drained, and mosquitoes earn their reputation in summer — pack accordingly. The fall payoff is sandhill cranes staging by the thousands around Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area.
